Candle Care

How to Care for your Candle

At Cole&Rider we take your safety seriously and want you to experience the full enjoyment and pleasure from our candles safely.

It is very important that you burn candles responsibly to ensure their safe use.

We have put some Guidelines together to help you keep safe and so you can get the full enjoyment out of your candle.

Candle Safety

  • Remove all packaging before lighting
  • Handle with care; glass containers are fragile
  • Only burn in a suitable holder. Place on a protected, heat-resistant, dry surface, away from anything that can catch fire or other fire and heat resistant surface
  • Don’t burn candles under shelves.
  • Keep candles apart. Leave at least 10cm between two burning candles
  • Use holders designed for the particular candle style
  • Keep children and pets away. Candles should be out of reach of children and pets
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, or any combustible material
  • Avoid burning candles in draughts
  • Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep them within sight at all times
  • Keep all matches and lighters out of the reach of children
  • Use a snuffer or a spoon to put them out. It's safer than blowing them, which can send sparks and hot wax flying
  •  Candles that you may think you have extinguished, always double check
  • Position the candle away from curtains. Don't put candles near curtains or other fabrics - or furniture. And keep them out of draughts

How to get the best from your Candle

  • Initial burn and to minimize wax left on the sides of the jar, burn for 3 hours but no longer than 4 hours at a time. It is normal for some wax to be left. The amount will vary per fragrance and burning conditions
  • Keep wick trimmed to 5mm at all times to keep the flame central and avoid mushrooming
  • Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the jar. The jar may become hot. Handle carefully
  • If smoking occurs, check for draught or high traffic areas, which may cause flame to flicker and smoke. Also, be sure that the wick is no longer than 5mm. If it is, extinguish, trim to 5mm and relight
  • Extinguish carefully before replacing the lid
  • Make sure you stop burning your candle when 10mm of wax remains at the bottom, keeping an eye on a burning candle when the wax is low.

How to store your Candle properly

  • The candle wax and fragrance oils we use in our candles are sensitive to both temperature and light, so please be careful when storing candles for an extended period of time
  • If you store your candle, be sure it is in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or intense light. Keeping it in a dark place like a cupboard or box will protect it from fading and discolouration
